Writing your Future

Writing your Future imageWhat makes universities successful? Managers in academic departments and professional services certainly play a critical role. They have to create direct, persuasive communications that achieve the university’s objectives. This programme helps you do that by finding an authentic, motivating voice that engages audiences – internal and external.

Writing your Future is designed for those that shape the future narrative for their organisation, and that of their own leadership. It takes places over two days in inspiring yet accessible locations across England.

Benefits

You’ll find new ways to seize attention and achieve action through the reports, strategy documents, business cases and change narratives you write. By building a collaborative culture, you will develop ideas and partnerships with a network of colleagues from other institutions. You have the potential to shape the future through your words. This programme gives you the confidence and the techniques to do so.

The programme will challenge and support you to:

    • Create direct, persuasive communications that achieve your unique objectives
    • Communicate a narrative for your organisation which will help to shape its future
    • Learn and practise how to engage relevant audiences through clear and authentic pieces of writing
    • Co-create an open professional culture in which to work on during the programme, alongside peers from other institutions

Your programme experience

As a key manager in your institution, you’ll work with two facilitators and a group of peers on individual writing tasks and some group activities. The programme will offer you the inspiration and time to work on developing and communicating a vision of the future for the area where you lead and manage in your organisation.

We’ll draw on a wide range of techniques and give you the opportunity to put these into practice on pieces of writing you can use at work. We’ll aim to make your writing engaging and motivating, and offer individual feedback on how to strengthen what you communicate.

Here’s how the programme is structured:

Day 1

  • Introducing where you’ve come from and what you stand for
  • Building creative scenarios for the future in your organisation
  • Exploring and challenging the genres of your communications

Day 2

  • Finding the voice that persuades and motivates
  • Writing narratives of the future
  • Practising to maximise the impact of the future narrative you portray

Locations and venues

 Kings Head Hotel, 7 – 8 February 2018

Steeped in history and dating from at least the mid fourteenth century, the Kings Head Hotel has had a colourful and historically poignant life. First known as a coaching inn, the building has transformed through the years from a private residence to a listed building and hotel. A little touch of luxury is the additional spa located within the beautiful stone vaults of the hotel.

Situated in the picturesque market town of Cirencester,  the hotel is connected to a number of transport hubs at Bristol, Gloucester, Stroud and Swindon.

The Walton, 7 – 8 March 2018

The Walton - fireplaceBuilt in the early 19th century, The Walton began life as a hunting lodge for Nottingham Castle’s deer park. Retaining much of its historic charm with open log fires, painted alcoves and an array of comfy armchairs, there’s plenty to inspire your inner writer over the course of this programme.

Situated in the historic city centre, The Walton is just 20 minutes walk from the main railway station. There is an onsite car park for those who will be driving.

Hornington Manor, 3 – 4 May 2018

Hornington Manor is a Grade II listed property nestled in the Yorkshire countryside, just outside the small village of Bolton Percy.  Hornington Manor is set within the grounds of Harrison Spinks Farm, surrounded by hedgerows, woodland and river frontage.
